Imphal, Oct 24 (NationPress) The United Naga Council (UNC), the leading organization representing the Naga people in Manipur, has proclaimed a ‘Genna’, a significant day of homage and festivity, to celebrate the upcoming civic reception of NSCN-IM head Thuingaleng Muivah, set for October 29 at the district headquarters of Senapati.
'Genna' embodies the Naga cultural practice of instituting restrictions to facilitate maximum community involvement during a national holiday or important day for the people.
During this period, members of the Naga community typically refrain from daily activities to engage in rituals and celebrate their collective identity. In honor of this momentous occasion, the UNC has mandated that all educational institutions and businesses in Naga-populated regions close their doors.
UNC President N.G. Lorho, while announcing the ‘Genna’, stated, "In alignment with our traditions and cultural customs, the Naga community in Manipur hereby declares a Genna to commemorate the historic Civic Reception for the living legend Muivah at Tahamzam (Senapati) on October 29."
“During this ‘Genna’, we urge all community members to observe holidays in all educational institutions, and shops must remain closed as a sign of respect. We also ask everyone to abstain from all economic and commercial activities and to take part in community gatherings and events to celebrate this occasion. Let us uphold the Naga spirit of unity and solidarity,” the UNC leader emphasized.
Nonagenarian Naga leader Muivah, who also holds the title of Ato Kilonser (Prime Minister) of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), returned to his native Ukhrul district in Manipur on Wednesday (October 22) for the first time in 50 years, visiting his birthplace in Somdal village.
Currently, Muivah is residing in Somdal village and will head back to Dimapur via Manipur’s Senapati district on October 29.
Upon his arrival, thousands of Nagas from various backgrounds, donned in traditional clothing and waving NSCN-IM flags, greeted Muivah at Bakshi Ground in Ukhrul district after his helicopter journey from Dimapur in Nagaland.
A significant number of Naga men, brandishing traditional spears and dressed in customary headgear, gathered at the reception venue to welcome Muivah, the principal figure in the Naga peace negotiations with the Union government since the NSCN-IM entered into a ceasefire in 1997.
The influential Naga organization Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) coordinated all arrangements for Muivah and his associates' highly anticipated visit to the Ukhrul district.
