Nalasopara high-rise fire kills 2 women, 25 rescued in Palghar
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Two women lost their lives and at least 25 to 30 residents were evacuated after a massive fire ripped through the multi-storey Imperial Heights building in the Achole area on Nalasopara-Vasai Link Road in Palghar district, Maharashtra, on the night of 14 October 2026. The blaze broke out around 11.30 pm, trapping several occupants on the upper floors and triggering a large-scale emergency response.
The Victims
The deceased have been identified as Falguni Shah, 50, and Ashwini Parkar, 50. According to Dr Kavita Jagada, in charge of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation's Tulinj Hospital, both women had sustained minor burn injuries, and preliminary findings suggested they likely died after inhaling smoke into their lungs. Following the completion of panchnama proceedings, their bodies were sent to the mortuary in Vasai West; the final cause of death is to be confirmed after post-mortem reports.
Scale of the Fire and Rescue Operations
Rohan More, Chief Fire Officer of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, said he was alerted about the incident by local corporator Ashok Shelke around midnight, by which time two fire engines from the Achole area had already reached the site. The fire was initially reported on the fourth floor, but the severity became apparent only when fire brigade personnel arrived.
The blaze was found to be particularly intense on the 13th and 14th floors, with traces of fire or embers also detected on the third and ninth floors. The door leading to the refuge floor on the 12th floor was engulfed in flames. Multiple fire engines, water tankers, water browsers, specialised water towers, and private water tankers were deployed. Eight residents were rescued from outside the building using a special turntable ladder (TTL) machine, while others managed to descend on their own.
What Officials Said
Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. confirmed that around 15 to 20 people were initially rescued with firefighter assistance and TTL machines, with additional residents evacuating independently. He said nearby banquet halls and hotels had been made available to provide temporary accommodation to displaced families.
The Commissioner noted that given the intense heat in the stairwell, firefighters carefully assessed the situation before evacuating trapped residents in a planned manner. He added that a detailed investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the fire, examining the building's construction permissions, fire safety approvals, the condition of firefighting systems, and the possibility of a short circuit in the electrical panel. 'Appropriate action will be taken if any negligence or safety deficiencies are found,' he said.
Officials at the Scene
Vasai-Virar Mayor Ajeev Patil, MLA Sneha Dubey Pandit, Additional Commissioner Sanjay Herwade, City Engineer Pradeep Pachange, ACP Sunil Jaibhaye, the senior police inspector of the MBVV Police Station, and other police personnel reached the site to oversee rescue efforts. The incident has raised fresh questions about fire safety compliance in high-rise residential buildings in the Vasai-Virar belt, an area that has seen rapid and dense vertical construction in recent years.
Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established and will be confirmed only after the investigation is completed, according to Chief Fire Officer More. Authorities say they will scrutinise building safety records and probe whether mandatory fire safety systems were operational at the time of the incident. The outcome of that probe is expected to determine whether any criminal or regulatory action follows.
