Bhubaneswar, July 22 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his dismay on Tuesday regarding the exclusion of the Paika rebellion from the textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
“I am profoundly troubled to learn that the NCERT has omitted #Odisha’s Paika Rebellion or Paika Bidroha from its educational materials. The Paika rebellion marked a pivotal moment in Odisha’s history, where our valiant Paikas stood up with remarkable bravery against the oppressive British forces in 1817. I have consistently urged the Government of India to recognize it as the first war of independence. The Paikas united to resist the brutalities of colonial rule with unmatched valor,” Patnaik stated on X.
He labeled the removal of this significant event as a dishonor to the courageous Paika soldiers of Odisha and called on the Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the Union Education Minister to restore this topic in the curriculum, thereby honoring the rich legacy of Paik Bidroha.
“The exclusion of this legendary rebellion, which occurred 40 years prior to the sepoy mutiny, is a grave disservice to our heroic Paikas, especially 200 years after the rebellion that ignited people's movements against British rule. I implore Chief Minister Shri @MohanMOdisha and Union Minister of Education Shri @dpradhanbjp to ensure justice for Paika Bidroha and Odisha,” the BJD leader further emphasized in his post on X.
The NCERT responded on Monday with a press release addressing reports about the omission of various regional resistance movements from the Grade 8 Social Science textbook “Exploring Society: India and Beyond.”
“It is important to clarify that this textbook is the first volume. The second volume is nearing completion and is slated for release in Sept-Oct 2025. It will cover topics related to regional resistance movements and armed uprisings, including the Paika rebellion and the Kuka movement of the Sikhs in Punjab,” the NCERT informed.
