Bhubaneswar, Dec 14 (NationPress) The choice made by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik to decline the recent increase in salary and allowances designated for the Leader of the Opposition has ignited a political discussion in Odisha.
In remarks to the press, Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo stated on Sunday, “There was an opportunity for him to share his perspective in the Assembly. Why did he not come forward and express his views there? This appears to be a mere political maneuver.”
Additionally, senior BJP leader Jayanarayan Mishra criticized the BJD chief, asserting that Patnaik is affluent and does not require the increased salary and allowances. He also pointed out that BJD leaders have been vocal in advocating for a salary increase for members of the Legislative Assembly.
Previously, on Saturday, Patnaik communicated his decision to forgo the salary and allowances in a letter addressed to CM Mohan Charan Majhi. He mentioned the contributions of his family, recalling that in 2015, they chose to donate their ancestral property, 'Anand Bhawan' in Cuttack, for the benefit of the people of Odisha. Patnaik urged CM Majhi to allocate his salary and allowances for the welfare of the populace and the government.
“In the same spirit, I would like to renounce the salary and allowances increased for the Leader of Opposition, recently approved by the Odisha Legislative Assembly. I kindly request you to use the funds for the welfare of the impoverished citizens of our State,” Patnaik expressed in his letter.
In response, BJD leader Ganeswar Behera defended the salary and allowances increase, mentioning that BJD has been advocating for this raise for several years.
It is noteworthy that the Odisha Assembly has recently enacted four bills that significantly enhance the salaries and allowances of MLAs, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Minister.
