New Delhi, Aug 7 (NationPress) In a pivotal effort to cultivate patriotism and impart vital lessons on valor and sacrifice, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has integrated chapters on three iconic Indian war heroes—Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma—into its updated academic curriculum.
These inclusions are part of a wider initiative to weave the legacy of the National War Memorial into the fabric of school education.
The narratives of these military legends will now be incorporated into Class VIII (English), Class VIII (Urdu), and Class VII (Urdu), as per a statement released by the Ministry of Defence on Thursday.
The objective of these new chapters is to offer students motivating stories of bravery, leadership, and responsibility. Field Marshal Manekshaw, the first officer in India to attain the rank of Field Marshal, is renowned for his tactical genius and leadership during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Brigadier Mohammad Usman, who was awarded the Mahavir Chakra posthumously, made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1947-48 Kashmir conflict. Major Somnath Sharma, the inaugural recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, was killed in the Battle of Badgam while valiantly defending Srinagar from Pakistani aggressors.
These educational additions stem from the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education alongside NCERT to enhance awareness of the National War Memorial (NWM) among young students. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019, the NWM at India Gate serves as a solemn homage to the country’s fallen heroes.
The initiative also aims to instill values of resilience, empathy, national pride, and civic duty among students.
In a related update, NCERT has also announced plans to include ‘Operation Sindoor’—India's swift and strategic response to the tragic Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the loss of 26 innocent lives. This inclusion is anticipated to give students a contemporary perspective on national security and the evolving role of India's armed forces.
