New Delhi, Sep 3 (NationPress) The exchange of harsh words persisted on Wednesday between the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc regarding the disparaging comments made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late mother during the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra'.
The BJP-led NDA condemned the opposition for reportedly making disrespectful remarks concerning PM Modi and his deceased mother. According to the BJP and its allies, such statements are an "affront to every mother in the nation" and indicate the opposition's "declining standards".
In response, the Congress party accused the BJP of hypocrisy, recalling numerous occasions where leaders, including Congress parliamentary leader Sonia Gandhi, faced derogatory comments from ruling party members.
BJP leader Ram Kadam asserted that the opposition has overstepped the bounds of decency.
In an interview with IANS, Ram Kadam stated, “The opposition's language and rhetoric are deteriorating quickly, which is disgraceful for the country. PM Modi's statement is entirely accurate—the opposition needs to elevate its language and uphold dignity.”
Col. (Retd.) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, a minister in the Rajasthan Cabinet and BJP MLA from Jhotwara, labeled the comments as "regrettable and disgraceful".
“Congress and RJD supporters have insulted the mother of India's Prime Minister. This reflects their mindset. Even after investigations revealed that the comments originated from their own ranks, they refuse to take responsibility,” he noted.
Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC was particularly harsh in her critique.
“The attack on PM Modi's mother transcends personal offense—it is an insult to every mother in this nation. This exemplifies the true nature of the Congress and RJD. Their so-called ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ has devolved into a ‘Voter Ananya Yatra,’ disseminating falsehoods and targeting Indian culture, women, and mothers. In Bihar, a region known for its women’s strength, such language will not be tolerated. The women of Bihar will respond appropriately,” she expressed.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal emphasized the emotional toll of the remarks on the Prime Minister.
“If someone’s mother is insulted, emotions will naturally arise. We are all aware of the profound impact PM Modi felt from his late mother and the hardships she faced while raising him. Yesterday, the Prime Minister's pain was evident in his words. Those who employed such language from their platform should feel ashamed,” Khandelwal added.
From the Janata Dal (Secular), Nikhil Kumarswamy also voiced his disapproval.
“No society condones this type of rhetoric. Regrettably, personal attacks have become commonplace in modern politics. PM Modi is a leader of significant stature, and such remarks cannot be justified or endorsed,” he stated.
Conversely, the Congress party accused the ruling party of manipulating the issue for political gain. AICC Secretary Shahnawaz Chaudhary alleged that the BJP is "manufacturing sympathy" surrounding the Prime Minister.
“The BJP and PM Modi, beset by accusations of vote theft, are intentionally raising this issue to distract the public. Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav had already departed the stage when the remark was uttered. The individual responsible was not affiliated with the Congress—he was planted by the BJP itself,” Chaudhary stated.
He further claimed that PM Modi himself was “exploiting the name of his late mother for political purposes”.
“This is a desperate ploy to garner sympathy. The Congress does not engage in such language, does not support it, and does not condone it. We have made a clear statement distancing ourselves from the individual, and our spokespersons nationwide are reinforcing this message,” Chaudhary asserted.
Recalling the BJP’s own history, he alluded to derogatory comments previously made against Sonia Gandhi.
“The BJP should first clarify its own history before admonishing Congress about dignity,” he added.
Congress leader Hussain Dalwai also defended his party, asserting that it has never disrespected women.
“Neither Rahul Gandhi nor Tejashwi Yadav made such statements. The Prime Minister’s mother is a mother to us all. The Congress has consistently honored women. Gandhiji engaged women in the freedom struggle en masse, and the Constitution grants women full rights. The BJP has no authority to lecture the Congress on respecting women,” Dalwai concluded.
