New Delhi, April 27 (NationPress) The Vice Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Kuljeet Singh Chahal, conducted a thorough review on Sunday regarding the agency's readiness to address waterlogging issues. After convening a meeting with NDMC Secretary Tariq Thomas and members from the Civil Engineering Department, Chahal examined several critical locations prone to waterlogging, such as Purana Quila Road, Dayal Singh College, and Bharti Nagar.
Chahal reaffirmed the agency's dedication to mitigating waterlogging, emphasizing that NDMC is rapidly implementing advanced technologies and climate-resilient strategies.
“The NDMC is initiating projects like trenchless rehabilitation of outdated brick drains and conducting feasibility assessments for the creation of artificial reservoirs in parks and ridge areas to collect monsoon runoff from streets and public areas,” stated Chahal.
He mentioned that these initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency, environmental sustainability, and livability of India's cities by 2047.
During the site visit, he laid the foundation for a substantial sump (pit) with a capacity of 5 lakh liters, located behind the Judges’ Bungalows near Purana Quila Road.
He explained that this new sump is a key element of NDMC's extensive monsoon readiness and urban water management plan. Rainwater will be stored in this sump and subsequently directed into the drainage system.
“Sumps are vital for flood management and preventing waterlogging, allowing for the swift collection and disposal of rainwater. This mitigates urban flooding and reduces infrastructure damage,” he noted.
An official highlighted that the NDMC's drainage system is categorized into four zones based on connectivity to major MCD drains: Dr Sen Nursing Home Drain Zone: Pachkuiyan Road, parts of Nehru Nagar, R.K. Ashram Marg, and Connaught Place; Drain No 14 Zone: Judges’ Bungalows, Tilak Marg, Purana Quila Road, Supreme Court, and India Gate areas; Kushak Drain Zone: Chanakyapuri and surrounding areas; and Barapulla Drain Zone: covering approximately 60% of NDMC’s area (around 1,918 hectares), which connects to Sunheri Nallah (a branch of the Barapulla Drain).
