New Delhi, June 1 (NationPress) The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to erect a 27-metre tall clock tower at the Talkatora roundabout, as announced by Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday.
This impressive structure will feature a 2-meter clock and has received the green light from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC). It aims to carve out a unique identity within Lutyens' Delhi.
Chahal emphasized that various municipal authorities across India boast iconic clock towers, and now the NDMC will join this tradition by creating a remarkable architectural feature.
The clock tower will exhibit an octagonal design, constructed from Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), and will be embellished with a layer of clay bricks.
The vicinity will be enhanced with granite flooring, steel railings, and marble adornments. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1.3 crore, with an ambitious target for completion by December 2025.
Chahal remarked, “Clock towers are not merely timekeepers; they embody a city’s identity, heritage, and architectural value. They historically play a crucial role in providing public time information.”
This clock tower is poised to become a new attraction in Lutyens' Delhi, marking the access point into the NDMC zone from neighboring MCD areas like Rajendra Nagar and Karol Bagh.
The structure will feature internal stairs for maintenance and safety railings around the tower, with a marble base decoration.
Chahal noted that the project draws inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047” and aligns with the national initiative to enhance the beauty of Indian cities while preserving their cultural legacy.
This architectural marvel will serve not only as a timekeeping structure but will also symbolize national pride, cultural identity, and urban sophistication.
