Government Launches National Dental Commission to Revolutionize Dental Education and Healthcare Quality
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) On Friday, the government announced the establishment of the National Dental Commission (NDC), accompanied by three independent boards that will take the place of the Dental Council of India (DCI).
The announcements were made official on March 19, with the NDC's structure becoming operational on the same day, as per a statement from the Health Ministry.
This initiative is considered a significant reform aimed at enhancing the quality of dental education and ensuring it meets international benchmarks.
With the implementation of the NDC Act on March 19, 2026, the Dentists Act, 1948 will be repealed, leading to the dissolution of the Dental Council of India from that date, according to the ministry's announcement.
Dr. Sanjay Tewari has been named as the Chairperson of the NDC, with Dr. Mousumi Goswami serving as a Part-Time Member, as per the ministry's statement.
To facilitate the operations of the Commission, three autonomous entities have been formed: the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Education Board to oversee dental education; the Dental Assessment and Rating Board to manage accreditation and institutional evaluations; and the Ethics and Dental Registration Board to regulate professional conduct and dentist registration.
The NDC will be responsible for creating regulations to enforce the provisions of the Act; conducting assessments and ratings of dental institutions; evaluating human resources; promoting dental research; developing guidelines for fee structures in private dental colleges; and establishing standards for community dental care, education, research, and professional ethics.
This reform, according to the ministry, signifies a pivotal shift toward a regulatory framework that is transparent, focused on quality, and accountable, superseding the previous elected structure.
The Commission aims to implement necessary and long-overdue regulatory enhancements in dental education and improve access to affordable oral healthcare nationwide.
