Agartala, May 17 (NationPress) The government of Tripura has appointed Anurag Dhankar, an IPS officer from the 1994 batch, as the new Director General of Police (DGP), succeeding Amitabh Ranjan, according to official sources.
A notification from the General Administration (Personnel and Training) Department stated: "In the interest of public service, the Governor, in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission, is pleased to appoint Anurag Dhankar, IPS (Tripura cadre 1994 batch), DGP, Tripura, to the post of Director General of Police."
A senior police official remarked that Anurag Dhankar has spent around 16 years serving in various capacities in Tripura and possesses extensive knowledge of policing in the state.
The outgoing DGP Amitabh Ranjan, who is a 1988 batch Indian Police Service officer, is set to retire this month.
Amitabh Ranjan took over as Tripura DGP on July 28, 2022.
Currently, Anurag Dhankar holds the position of DGP (Intelligence) in Tripura.
With a postgraduate degree in Food Technology from CFTRI, Mysore, Anurag Dhankar also possesses a Master's degree in police management from Osmania University and a postgraduate diploma in cyber crimes from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.
He is a certified fraud examiner from ACFE, US, and has significant experience in serving Tripura from 1995 to 2003, as noted by officials.
His roles have included Sub-Divisional Police Officer in Longtharai Valley and District Superintendent of Police in undivided West and South Tripura districts, along with serving as Superintendent of Police in Special Branch and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Headquarters).
During 2003-04, Anurag Dhankar contributed to the UN Mission in Kosovo and from 2005 to 2013, he took on central deputation roles as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Upon returning from central deputation, he was the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) for Tripura from 2013 to 2016.
From 2016 to 2023, he again went on central deputation, serving as Inspector General in the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force, and held positions as Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI.
Anurag Dhankar has also led the Special Investigation Team for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
He has been awarded the police medal for meritorious service and the President's police medal for distinguished service.
On September 18, 2023, Anurag Dhankar took charge as Tripura's Additional Director General of Police and was subsequently appointed as Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order).
