Imphal/Agartala, July 30 (NationPress) - The Director General of Manipur Police, Rajiv Singh, alongside his counterpart from Tripura, Anurag, has been shortlisted for the prestigious role of Director General (DG) within Central forces, according to reports from officials on Wednesday.
A high-ranking police official in Agartala revealed that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned the empanelment of 35 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the 1993 and 1994 batches for key positions at the Centre, specifically at the DG or equivalent level. These 35 senior IPS officers represent various cadres from across the nation.
Rajiv Singh, an IPS officer from the Tripura cadre of the 1993 batch, was appointed as the chief of Manipur Police, stepping in to replace P Doungel just a month following the outbreak of ethnic violence in the northeastern state in May 2023. Prior to this role, Singh served as the Additional Director General of Tripura Police before transitioning to a central posting as Inspector General with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) before his move to Manipur. Meanwhile, the Tripura government appointed Anurag, a 1994 batch IPS officer from the Tripura cadre, as the state's DGP, taking over from Amitabh Ranjan, on May 17.
A senior police official noted that Anurag has accumulated approximately 16 years of diverse experience in policing throughout Tripura. Prior to his DGP appointment, he held the position of DGP (Intelligence) in Tripura. His extensive career included serving as Sub-Divisional Police Officer in Longtharai Valley and as District Superintendent of Police for the undivided West and South Tripura districts, along with roles as Superintendent of Police in the Special Branch and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Headquarters).
Between 2003 and 2004, Anurag also participated in the UN Mission in Kosovo. From 2005 to 2013, he was on central deputation, serving as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General within the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Upon returning from his central deputation, he took on the role of Tripura Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) from 2013 to 2016. From 2016 to 2023, he returned to central deputation, serving as Inspector General of Research and Correctional Administration in the Bureau of Police Research and Development and as Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force, in addition to his roles as Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI.
Anurag also chaired the Special Investigation Team concerning the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. He has received a police medal for meritorious service and the President's police medal for distinguished service.
On September 18, 2023, Anurag took charge as Tripura's Additional Director General of Police, later promoted to Director General of Police (Intelligence) while also overseeing the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) effective January 2024.
