Agartala, May 17 (NationPress) The government of Tripura has officially announced the appointment of Anurag Dhankar, a senior IPS officer from the 1994 batch, as the new Director General of Police (DGP). He succeeds Amitabh Ranjan, as confirmed by government officials.
A notification from the General Administration (Personnel and Training) Department stated: "In the interest of public service, the Governor, in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission, is pleased to appoint Anurag Dhankar, IPS (Tripura cadre 1994 batch), as DGP of Tripura."
According to a senior police official, Anurag Dhankar has extensive experience in policing within Tripura, having served for approximately 16 years.
The outgoing DGP, Amitabh Ranjan, who belongs to the 1988 batch of the Indian Police Service, is expected to retire later this month.
Ranjan took over as Tripura's DGP on July 28, 2022.
Currently, Anurag Dhankar holds the position of DGP (Intelligence) for Tripura.
He has an academic background that includes a postgraduate degree in Food Technology from CFTRI, Mysore, a Master’s in Police Management from Osmania University, and a postgraduate diploma in Cyber Crimes from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.
Additionally, he is a certified fraud examiner from ACFE, US, and has rich experience in the state, particularly between 1995 and 2003.
He has held various roles, including Sub-Divisional Police Officer in Longtharai Valley and District Superintendent of Police for the undivided West and South Tripura districts, among other notable positions.
From 2003 to 2004, Anurag Dhankar participated in the UN Mission in Kosovo. Between 2005 and 2013, he was on central deputation, serving as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Upon returning from central deputation, he became the Tripura Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) from 2013 to 2016.
His subsequent roles from 2016 to 2023 included positions such as Inspector General in the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the Central Industrial Security Force, as well as various high-level roles within the CBI.
Moreover, he has chaired the Special Investigation Team for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
