NHAI Orders Immediate Verification of Vehicle Registration Numbers by FASTag Issuer Banks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced new instructions for all banks issuing FASTags, mandating them to promptly verify the Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) associated with the FASTags they provide.
This initiative comes in response to complaints regarding mismatches between the VRN recorded by FASTag readers and the actual registration number visible on vehicle plates.
“Such inconsistencies could weaken enforcement measures, potentially resulting in loss of Government revenue and attracting penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988,” noted the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
This initiative aims to improve the precision and dependability of data within the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) framework. The NHAI is dedicated to enhancing transparency, compliance, and the operational efficiency of the ETC system.
The NHAI highlighted the significance of ensuring the accuracy of VRN mapping with FASTags, particularly in light of future technology-driven advancements like Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling.
Within the MLFF structure, enforcement measures, including the issuance of electronic notices (e-Notices) to vehicles that do not comply, will heavily rely on accurate and verified vehicle identification information.
It was also noted that a substantial number of these mismatches are linked to FASTags issued before the integration of FASTag issuance with the VAHAN database.
During that timeframe, validation processes were limited and relied more on manual methods, resulting in potential discrepancies in vehicle identification records.
In this regard, all FASTag issuer banks have been instructed to conduct urgent verification of the FASTags they have issued and to blacklist those tags that are identified as linked to incorrect or invalid VRNs, in line with established Government protocols.
