How is Rajasthan Police Protecting Citizens from Fake FASTag Annual Pass Websites?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Rajasthan Police have released a public notice cautioning residents against a phishing scam where cyber criminals impersonate the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to sell counterfeit FASTag annual passes.
Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) Sanjay Agarwal stated that these fraudsters are employing sophisticated methods, including paid ads on Google and search engine optimization (SEO), to rank their fraudulent websites at the top of the search results.
“Users often mistakenly believe that the first link on Google is legitimate. However, these criminals pay for their deceptive sites to be labeled as ‘Sponsored’,” Agarwal explained.
As per the advisory, these fraudulent sites closely mimic the official NHAI website in terms of logos, design, and layout, which makes them hard to differentiate from authentic platforms.
Reportedly, these scam websites charge around Rs 3,000 for an annual FASTag pass and generate a QR code for payment. Once the code is scanned, the funds are diverted directly to the fraudsters’ accounts.
The police confirmed that payments for government services should never be made to personal accounts. Officials advised users to identify fake platforms by verifying payment details and website URLs.
Citizens are encouraged to use only official resources like the Rajmarg Yatra app or authorized banking websites when purchasing or renewing FASTag passes. Users should meticulously check website URLs and avoid suspicious domains that may have unrelated or unfamiliar names.
Authorities also recommend confirming the payment recipient before finalizing any transaction. If scanning a QR code reveals an individual’s name instead of an authorized entity, the transaction should be halted immediately.
The police have urged the community to refrain from sharing banking information, OTPs, or personal data with unfamiliar individuals.
Victims of cyber fraud can reach out to the national cyber helpline at 1930 or contact Rajasthan Police helplines at 9256001930 and 9257510100. Complaints can also be filed on the Government of India’s cybercrime portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
