New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has announced its decision to send a team to Murshidabad in West Bengal to investigate reports of human rights violations stemming from violent demonstrations against the Waqf Act, 2025.
Following a complaint received by the Commission, an NHRC Bench led by member Priyank Kanoongo took notice under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
“Due to the gravity of the situation, the Director General (Investigation) of NHRC has been instructed to assign a team from the Commission's Investigation Division for an on-site inquiry in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The inquiry report is expected within three weeks,” stated Kanoongo, who expressed his intent to join the team.
The NHRC Bench's ruling indicated that the complaint involves various social media reports alleging the murder of two named individuals (a father and son) amid the ongoing protests against the Waqf Act.
The complainant accused members of the Muslim community of conducting attacks on individuals from the Hindu community and their properties.
Additionally, the complaint pointed to the inaction of the Murshidabad District police, resulting in a mass exodus of Hindus from the area.
There were also claims that Muslim individuals pursued trucks carrying fleeing members of the Hindu community.
Moreover, Hindu-owned shops were reported to have been looted and vandalized, with assailants attacking those trying to escape in their personal vehicles.
Earlier in the day, two individuals were arrested concerning the murder of Hargobindo Das and his son Chandan Das in Samserganj, Murshidabad, last week.
This double murder occurred as the district was in turmoil following violent protests against the newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act.
In response, personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces and state police have been conducting route marches to reassure the community.
Internet services remain suspended in affected areas of Murshidabad and parts of neighboring Malda and Birbhum districts.
The number of arrests linked to the violence and vandalism in Murshidabad has already surpassed 200.
