NIA Expands Charges Against Two More Individuals in PFI Conspiracy Investigation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 12 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has submitted a supplementary chargesheet against two additional individuals in connection with a 2022 case involving an alleged conspiracy orchestrated by the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) aimed at undermining peace and communal harmony through illegal and anti-national actions.
This chargesheet was presented on Wednesday to the NIA Special Court, raising the total number of individuals arrested and charged in this case to 20.
The NIA's investigation identified the two accused as Mahboob Alam Nadvi, the president of PFI's Bihar unit, and Shamim Akhtar, the vice-president of the same unit.
Both individuals have been charged under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Investigators allege that they played a significant role in a conspiracy designed to instill fear and foster religious discord while promoting PFI's ideology.
The agency indicated that this conspiracy is connected to a document entitled 'India 2047 Towards Rule of Islam in India – Internal Document: Not for Circulation', which purportedly outlines a long-term ideological framework.
This document was reportedly confiscated by the Patna Police from Ahmad Palace in the Phulwarisharif area of Patna, where numerous meetings and training sessions for PFI members are believed to have occurred.
During the investigation, the NIA discovered that Mahboob Alam and Shamim Akhtar are alleged to have been involved in the recruitment and training of PFI members alongside other co-defendants.
The agency remarked that training sessions and meetings were hosted at Ahmad Palace, which subsequently became a focal point of the investigation.
The case originated on July 14, 2022, when the Bihar Police uncovered a suspected terrorist module linked to PFI in Phulwarisharif and apprehended multiple operatives.
Among those initially detained were Athar Parvez, Mohammad Jalaluddin, and Arman Malik.
During questioning, investigators reported that the suspects disclosed the names of additional persons of interest, including Marguv alias Danis and Shabbir.
Authorities also claimed that Marguv managed a social media group named 'Ghazwa-e-Hind', which allegedly connected youth from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Further claims indicate that Athar Parvez had ties to the outlawed organization Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
His brother, Manjar Alam, was previously implicated in the 2013 Patna Gandhi Maidan serial blasts that occurred during a rally featuring the then prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Due to the gravity of the allegations, the Bihar Police subsequently transferred the case to the NIA.
The central agency has since been engaged in an extensive investigation into the suspected network and its operations.
The investigation continues as authorities assess the magnitude of the alleged conspiracy, the recruitment network, and the ideological activities associated with the banned organization.
