Assam: NIA Imposes Sentences on Two Terror Defendants Linked to Ansarullah Bangla Team

Guwahati, Jan 23 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA), Special Court in Guwahati, has sentenced two individuals accused of terrorism in the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) case, as reported by NIA sources on Thursday.
The sentencing was delivered by the Special NIA court on Wednesday, with both defendants originating from Barpeta district in Assam.
They have been convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Defendant Mamunur Rashid received a sentence of three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000. Additionally, the court has mandated a one-month sentence and rigorous imprisonment for the duration already served (2 years, 10 months, and 13 days) under the UA(P) Act. He has also been sentenced to three months under section 120 (B) IPC.
Another defendant, Mukibul Hussain, also known as Makibul Hussain, has been sentenced to six months of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500, in addition to a 14-day sentence under section 120 (B) of IPC.
Similar to his co-defendant Mamunur, he has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for the time already served (2 years, 8 months, and 13 days) under the UA(P) Act.
This case, initiated in March 2022, involves a module of the ABT that is linked to the banned international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
The module, managed by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam, also known as Haroon Rashid, was operational in the Barpeta district of Assam.
The NIA submitted a chargesheet against eight accused individuals in August 2022, followed by an additional chargesheet against two more in August 2023.
Investigations and legal proceedings in this matter are ongoing.
In the meantime, the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has arrested 14 associates of the Bangladesh-based ABT from regions including Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala since December 17 of last year.
According to Assam Police officials, of the 14 arrested, including one Bangladeshi national, were operating under the leadership of Md Farhan Israk, a close ally of Jasimuddin Rahmani, the head of ABT.
The ABT dispatched a Bangladeshi national, Md Sad Radi, also known as Shab Sheikh, from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, to India with the aim of disseminating their harmful ideology among like-minded individuals throughout the country.
