Belagavi, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Karnataka Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, asserted on Wednesday that the state’s law and order conditions have significantly declined.
“Inmates in jails now possess mobile phones. The drug mafia has expanded its operations. It appears that even police officers have resorted to theft,” Ashoka remarked during the Legislative Assembly discussion, emphasizing that in Bengaluru Central Jail, murderers and terrorists are enjoying luxuries akin to five-star accommodations.
“Prisoners are paying off jail staff to be moved to more comfortable barracks. There’s also lobbying involved in this process. For instance, rowdy-sheeter Gubbacchi Sheena celebrated his birthday behind bars, even having a cake with his name on it. The method of smuggling such items into the jail remains a mystery,” he claimed.
He mentioned a video showing terrorist Shakeel Manna using a phone and noted that previously, a photo of actor Darshan with a cigarette had also surfaced from prison.
“The regulations stipulate that the Police Commissioner should conduct monthly inspections of the jail. Unfortunately, these visits have not occurred,” he stated.
He added that the guidelines recommend conducting surprise inspections.
Ashoka further claimed that in Karwar Jail, inmates were using drugs, and when they couldn’t obtain them, they attacked the staff.
He noted that of the 777 CCTV cameras installed, 100 are malfunctioning, and although jail authorities requested 1,123 cameras, the government has not allocated funds for their purchase.
“For the past two years, there has been no budget to pay prisoner wages. The government should reveal how much is owed,” he stated.
He alleged that police officers have engaged in corruption, citing that 130 police personnel in Bengaluru have been suspended for colluding with criminals within 11 months.
Ashoka highlighted a concerning bank robbery in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, where Rs 7 crore was stolen under the leadership of a police constable.
“In Bidar, the suspects related to a bank heist remain unfound. Criminals who once feared law enforcement now operate without restraint. Currently, there are 23,000 active rowdies and an alarming 43,000 motorcycles reported stolen,” he said.
In cybercrime, a staggering Rs 5,474 crore has been lost, with only Rs 627 crore recovered. While cases of digital arrests have increased, the Home Department is failing to raise public awareness about these issues, he remarked.

Ashoka expressed alarm that 15% of school children are partaking in narcotics, with some being lured into addiction through chocolate laced with drugs.
“Narcotics valued at Rs 150 crore are entering the state. The police department must identify those involved in this drug network and take decisive action,” he concluded.
