Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday expressed gratitude to the farmers who gave up their land for the construction of the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, calling them the bedrock of the nation's economic strength. His remarks came on the same day that the airport received its inaugural commercial flights, marking a landmark moment for the Delhi-NCR aviation ecosystem.

CM Yogi's tribute to farmers

Posting on social media platform X, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote: 'Our farmers are the foundation of our nation's prosperity. It is the responsibility of us all to honour the participation and contribution of farmers in the state's journey of development.' He also welcomed the farmers who travelled on the inaugural flight into Lucknow from the newly operational airport.

Reiterating his administration's commitment to agrarian welfare, Yogi added: 'With the spirit of ‘Honouring our farmers, saluting a prosperous India’, we remain committed to the progress of every single farmer.' The gesture underscored the political significance of land acquisition — a historically contentious issue in Uttar Pradesh — being reframed as a shared developmental journey.

IndiGo launches first flights from NIA

Low-cost carrier IndiGo became the first airline to commence commercial operations at Noida International Airport on 15 June. The first arrival was a flight from Lucknow, while the first departure headed to Bengaluru shortly thereafter. The airline said it will directly connect NIA to more than 16 destinations across India from day one.

'Opening of the Noida International Airport marks a new chapter in India's aviation story. Delhi-NCR now joins a select group of global megacities served by multiple airports,' said Aloke Singh, Chief Strategy Officer, IndiGo.

Connectivity for tier 2 and tier 3 cities

Beyond direct routes, IndiGo's network enables one-stop connectivity across 14 city pairs, linking smaller markets such as Bareilly, Kishangarh, Pantnagar, Dharamshala, and Jodhpur to each other via NIA. These connections are designed to improve air access between tier 2 and tier 3 cities and major metros, reducing layover dependency on congested hubs.

Strategic significance of NIA

Situated along the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, NIA is positioned to serve as both an aviation and logistics hub, relieving pressure on the congested Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. The airport's launch represents a significant infrastructure milestone for western Uttar Pradesh and the broader NCR region, which has long relied on a single major international gateway. With IndiGo's network in place, the airport is expected to draw both leisure and business travellers from a densely populated catchment area. How quickly passenger volumes ramp up will determine whether NIA fulfils its ambition as a genuine second airport for the capital region.
