Agartala/Shillong, May 9 (NationPress) In light of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, security measures along the northeastern states' borders with Bangladesh have been significantly enhanced, as confirmed by officials on Friday.
The four northeastern states of Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km) have a cumulative border of 1,880 km with Bangladesh.
While many sections of this extensive border are currently fenced, certain areas remain vulnerable due to lack of fencing.
Among the heightened security measures, a night curfew has been imposed in the bordering regions. Local security forces have also been stationed in border villages to prevent unauthorized crossings and illegal activities.
In Tripura, an official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) reported that Chief Minister Manik Saha convened a high-level meeting with senior officials from security, intelligence, and civil sectors to discuss improved surveillance along the India-Bangladesh boundary.
“The closed-session meeting extended for over an hour and included representatives from the Border Security Force (BSF), Assam Rifles, Tripura Police, various central and state forces, as well as officials from multiple intelligence agencies,” the official disclosed to IANS.
Tripura, which is bordered on three sides by Bangladesh, has a significant 856 km boundary with the neighboring nation.
In Meghalaya, the BSF has intensified monitoring efforts using advanced electronic surveillance equipment. The Inspector General (IG) of BSF's Meghalaya frontiers, O.P. Upadhyay, stated that vigilance has been further enhanced since last year, with recent improvements incorporating the latest technology.
“Our personnel are on constant high alert. Senior BSF officials regularly supervise rigorous patrols along the border,” he informed the media.
Upadhyay emphasized that BSF teams are implementing all necessary precautions while closely monitoring the borders. He also visited border posts along the Indo-Bangla international boundary in Meghalaya to evaluate the situation, stressing the need for increased vigilance to bolster security for the local population.
Another BSF official noted that following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22 and the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, operational activities of the border guarding force have been intensified across the entire 1,880-km Bangladesh border with the four northeastern states.
In Assam, BSF units have heightened security along the Bangladesh border amid the current India-Pakistan tensions and other regional disturbances.
An official from Assam's Border Protection and Development Department stated that the state government has escalated security measures along the International Border with Bangladesh.
A BSF spokesperson mentioned that border patrols have been intensified since the outbreak of violence in Bangladesh, particularly after the fall of the former Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024. “Our vigilance has been further reinforced following the Pahalgam terror incident and in light of the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions,” the spokesperson noted, adding that senior BSF officials frequently monitor the border situation round the clock.
