Northeast's first MEMU electric train launched, linking Tripura to Assam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on 5 July 2025 flagged off the first-ever Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service in the entire Northeast region, connecting Agartala in Tripura with Karimganj in southern Assam. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the service at Agartala Railway Station on 4 July, describing the launch as a new chapter in the state's railway history.
Key Details of the New Service
The Agartala–Karimganj MEMU train carries up to 3,600 passengers and will operate six days a week, excluding Sundays, with regular commercial services commencing from 6 July. The train comprises 12 stainless steel coaches and is equipped with LED lighting, bio-toilets, a GPS-based passenger information system, a public address system, and CCTV surveillance.
According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the train had previously operated as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and has now been upgraded to MEMU following the completion of route electrification — a transition he described as a landmark technological advancement.
Why MEMU Marks a Step Up from DEMU
Unlike diesel-powered DEMU trains, MEMU services run on electric traction, making them more energy-efficient, quieter, and cheaper to operate. They offer superior acceleration and deceleration, reducing station-to-station travel time. Crucially, MEMU trains produce zero emissions at the point of operation, aligning with Indian Railways' broader push toward greener infrastructure.
Sharma noted that the new service would benefit daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders, and tourists travelling between Tripura and adjoining parts of Assam, while also supporting local commerce and easing road traffic pressure.
The Railway Modernisation Context in Tripura
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath had earlier announced that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) completed 100 per cent electrification of the state's 271-km railway network — the prerequisite for MEMU operations. The broad-gauge network now stretches from Churaibari on the Tripura–Assam border to Sabroom near the India–Bangladesh border.
Nath noted that the first train reached Dharmanagar in northern Tripura in 1964, while rail connectivity to the state capital Agartala arrived only in 2008 — a gap of 44 years. The network was further extended to Sabroom in 2019. The international railway link connecting Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh was completed in 2023.
Political Acknowledgements and Infrastructure Push
Chief Minister Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for enabling the service. He said the MEMU launch would make daily commuting more time-efficient and environmentally responsible for thousands of passengers across the two states.
Under the Centre's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, redevelopment work is currently underway at four Tripura stations: Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat, and Dharmanagar. The state is already linked to major cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Firozpur, and Patna via long-distance express services.
Present at the inaugural function were Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, and Lumding Division DRM Sameer Lohana. With the electrification backbone now in place, NFR officials say the region is positioned for faster expansion of electric rail services across the Northeast.
