The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up efforts to launch regular electric train services between Tripura and Assam, with trial runs of Electric MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) passenger trains already underway on multiple routes, railway officials said on Tuesday, 16 June. The move marks a significant milestone in the electrification of the northeastern rail network, which has historically relied entirely on diesel-powered locomotives.

Trial Runs Underway on Key Routes

Six to eight-coach electric MEMU trains are currently operating on a trial basis, connecting Agartala with Dharmanagar in North Tripura, Sabroom in South Tripura, and Karimganj in southern Assam. A senior NFR official confirmed that these trials are designed to assess the performance of newly installed electrification infrastructure and detect any technical gaps before regular services begin.

'During the trial runs, the required voltage levels of the overhead electric lines and other technical parameters are being thoroughly examined. After receiving satisfactory reports from the concerned officials, the railway authorities will take a final decision regarding the regular operation of electric trains on these routes,' the official said.

Earlier, trial runs of passenger trains hauled by electric locomotives were also successfully conducted between Agartala railway station and Arunachal Junction in Assam's Cachar district. Before those passenger trials, the first goods train powered by an electric locomotive had operated between Badarpur station in southern Assam and Jirania station in Tripura, approximately 15 km north of Agartala. Officials noted that a few more trial runs are likely before the formal launch of regular electric operations.

Full Electrification of Tripura's Rail Network Completed

Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath had previously announced that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) has achieved 100 per cent electrification of the state's 271-km railway network. This network stretches from Churaibari on the Tripura-Assam border to Sabroom near the India-Bangladesh border in southern Tripura.

The electrification was enabled by a ₹46 crore railway electrification project launched in 2022. All related development and expansion works were reportedly completed within seven years, according to the minister.

Decades of Railway Expansion in Tripura

Tripura's railway history reflects a long arc of development. The first train reached Dharmanagar in northern Tripura in 1964, but it took another 44 years for rail connectivity to reach the state capital Agartala in 2008. The network was further extended to Sabroom in 2019.

Minister Nath had noted that the broad-gauge conversion of Tripura's earlier metre-gauge track was completed after 2014. The international rail link connecting Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh was also completed in 2023. Currently, more than 19 trains operate from Tripura to destinations across the country, though all have so far been diesel-hauled.

Vande Bharat Extension and Station Upgrades Planned

As electrified infrastructure nears completion, the NFR is also planning to extend Vande Bharat Express services to Silchar in Assam and Agartala in Tripura within the next few months, according to officials. Meanwhile, redevelopment work is currently underway at four Tripura stations — Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat, and Dharmanagar — under the Centre's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

With trial runs progressing and full electrification in place, the formal launch of regular electric passenger train services in Tripura appears closer than ever, setting the stage for a cleaner, faster rail future for the northeastern state.
