Guwahati/Agartala, May 23 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making significant strides to commence operations of the eagerly awaited electric locomotive-driven trains from Tripura as soon as possible, according to an official report released on Friday.
An NFR representative confirmed that a successful trial run of a passenger train powered by an electric locomotive took place on Friday, covering the route between Agartala railway station and Arunachal Junction railway station in Cachar district, southern Assam.
“Mandatory trial runs are essential prior to the regular operation of electric passenger trains. Additional trials of electric locomotive-operated trains are expected to be conducted before we initiate regular services from Tripura,” the official stated.
He further noted that the inaugural trial run for a goods train using an electric locomotive occurred on February 6, connecting Badarpur station in southern Assam with Jirania station, located 15 km north of Agartala railway station.
As per the NFR official, crucial infrastructural improvements, including electrification, have recently been completed in southern Assam and Tripura.
“Following the successful operation of additional passenger and goods trains with electric locomotives, we will start regular services of passenger trains on this route. Our team is diligently working to initiate these services as soon as possible,” the official added.
Tripura is now well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Firozpur, and Patna through various express trains, although until now, all passenger train operations have relied solely on diesel engines.
A ₹46 crore electrification initiative was launched in 2022 to link Tripura with the national railway network for electric trains.
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) will provide the necessary power for the railway's electric transmission lines. With the infrastructure for electric railway lines nearing completion, the renowned Vande Bharat Express trains are expected to extend their routes to both Silchar in Assam and Agartala within the upcoming months, according to the NFR representative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Assam's first Vande Bharat Express on May 29, 2023, connecting Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
The journey duration for the Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express is 5 hours and 30 minutes, a significant improvement over the previous fastest service, which took around 6 hours and 30 minutes.
This express train operates six days a week. The NFR oversees operations in the northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
