Agartala Railway Station is set for a sweeping overhaul under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with ₹48 crore sanctioned for Phase-I redevelopment works — and a new MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) passenger train service linking Agartala to Karimganj in southern Assam expected to be launched within the next 10 days. The twin announcements were made on 19 June by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava following a two-day inspection of railway infrastructure across Tripura.

What the Redevelopment Covers

The centrepiece of the upgrade is a new three-storey station building to be constructed at the heart of the station complex. The revamped facility will house commercial spaces, restaurants, cafeterias, modern retiring rooms, low-cost sleeping pods, and an improved circulating area with enhanced parking. The existing three retiring rooms — currently described as being in poor condition — will be replaced by eight to ten modern rooms with upgraded amenities, catering particularly to tourists and short-stay visitors.

The entire Phase-I project is targeted for completion by March next year. Looking further ahead, Shrivastava indicated that the number of platforms could be expanded from the present three to five, depending on future passenger traffic growth.

The MEMU Service: A Regional First

The proposed Agartala–Karimganj MEMU service is set to operate six days a week and, notably, would be the first MEMU service under the entire NFR zone. The launch is aimed at easing overcrowding on existing trains and improving daily commuter connectivity between Tripura and Assam. Operational preparations and crew training are currently underway ahead of the rollout.

Broader Infrastructure Push in Tripura

Shrivastava also confirmed that redevelopment works at Kumarghat in northern Tripura and Udaipur in Gomati district under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are on track for completion by September this year. Separately, all remaining ICF coaches on NFR routes are to be replaced with safer LHB coaches by the end of the current financial year.

On electrification, the General Manager confirmed that 100 per cent railway electrification has been completed across the NFR network, with full-scale electric train operations expected to commence once training and operational checks are finalised. A new petroleum terminal siding is also under construction at Sekerkote, in coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), with completion targeted by the end of August. The facility is intended to strengthen the state's fuel storage capacity to cover up to 30 days of reserves.

Context: Tripura's Rail Transformation Since 2016

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma noted that Tripura has seen significant rail expansion since the introduction of broad-gauge services to Agartala in 2016. Milestones include the Agartala–Akhaura international rail link with Bangladesh, the Narangi–Agartala Express, and the upcoming Vande Bharat service. Sharma also highlighted that the challenging terrain and heavy rainfall in Tripura make periodic on-ground inspections by senior officials essential for maintaining safe and reliable operations.

With the MEMU launch imminent and the ₹48 crore redevelopment underway, Agartala's railway ecosystem is entering one of its most consequential phases of modernisation — and the Northeast's connectivity ambitions appear firmly on track.
