Bhubaneswar, Oct 24 (NationPress) Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, Y.B. Khurania, emphasized on Friday that the primary aim of the Odisha Police in the near future is to disrupt the human trafficking networks operating within the state by leveraging advanced technologies such as information technology, digital tracking, and data analytics.
During the launch of a workshop focused on human trafficking, DGP Khurania stated, “Currently, human trafficking represents a serious and distressing challenge, not just for Odisha but for the entire nation. With the collective efforts from the judiciary, police, women and child welfare units, Labour Department, NGOs, and the public, we can effectively combat this abhorrent crime.”
Khurania also called upon all stakeholders to unite in the endeavor to establish Odisha as a model state in the battle against human trafficking, asserting that this issue transcends a mere crime, constituting a violation of fundamental human rights.
“Human trafficking is not just a criminal act; it is a severe infringement on human rights. It particularly strips women, children, and youth of their dignity, freedom, and future prospects. In Odisha, human trafficking manifests through sexual exploitation, forced labor, domestic child labor, and the trafficking of young women under the guise of job offers or marriage,” Khurania remarked.
The DGP underscored the pivotal role of Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking Units (IAHTUs) and District Labour Officers in combating this issue, labeling IAHTU officials as the backbone of investigative and victim rescue efforts.
Khurania revealed that the Odisha Police plans to enhance the IAHTUs by expanding human resources, offering specialized training, and improving technical knowledge and professional skills.
Additionally, the State Police are fostering close coordination with other states to implement effective strategies for curbing human trafficking.
It is noteworthy that the Odisha Police, through its initiative ‘Operation Anweshan’, has successfully rescued 1,209 children, comprising 131 boys and 1,078 girls.
