Bhubaneswar, July 24 (NationPress) The Odisha Higher Education Department has instructed the administrators of all government and non-government aided colleges to initiate awareness campaigns regarding the issue of drug abuse among the youth, with the objective of creating drug-free campuses.
In a communication sent out on Wednesday, the Department emphasized that the rising prevalence of drug and narcotic substance abuse among young people poses a significant danger to both individuals and society.
The letter highlighted the crucial role that colleges play in addressing the drug crisis, stating, "Educational institutions serve as the foundational spaces for shaping our nation's future and have a crucial duty to promote a healthy, safe, and drug-free environment."
The Department also mentioned the MANAS (Mental Health and Normalcy Augmentation System) Portal, which was launched by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). This platform allows students to report issues related to drug use on campuses via the National Helpline No. 1933.
"This portal also provides answers to questions regarding drug-related issues, counseling services, de-addiction centers, etc. You are encouraged to widely promote the MANAS Portal in your institution by organizing an awareness campaign," the Department instructed.
Furthermore, the Department urged all college principals to raise significant awareness among the public and students across the state through NSS volunteers to participate in the Anti-drug e-pledge on the 'My Gov' platform.
The department has called upon college leaders to carry out sensitization programs in their institutions to educate students about the detrimental effects of drug abuse.
It also encouraged organizing essay writing and debate competitions on this pressing issue.
"You are requested to enlighten your students about the harmful impacts of drugs on individuals and society by conducting sensitization programs, debates, essay writing, painting contests, rallies, etc.," the Department emphasized.
