Bhubaneswar, July 2 (NationPress) The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has requested distinct reports from the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), the Puri district Collector, and the Superintendent of Police regarding the tragic stampede that transpired at Saradhabali near Gundicha Temple in the early hours of June 29, resulting in the loss of three pilgrims’ lives.
In response to a petition lodged by Advocate Nishikant Mishra, the OHRC issued an order on June 30, mandating the relevant authorities to present their reports concerning the stampede by the next hearing scheduled for August 12.
"Considering the public interest of the complaint, this Division Bench acknowledges the matter and requests the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Puri, the Collector & District Magistrate of Puri, and the Superintendent of Police of Puri to ensure their respective reports are submitted by the impending date,” states the OHRC order.
The commission has also advised the state government to implement prompt remedial actions for the treatment of the individuals reported injured in the stampede.
Additionally, the OHRC has instructed the temple administration, collector, and SP of Puri district, along with all relevant officials, to adopt all necessary measures to prevent any similar incidents during the remainder of this year’s Rath Yatra in Puri.
Following the unfortunate stampede, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences to the devotees of Lord Jagannath and initiated an immediate investigation into security failures.
The Odisha government has also reassigned Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal.
In addition, two senior police officials - DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee - have been suspended for neglecting their duties. The government has also announced an immediate ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakhs for each family of the deceased pilgrims.
