Bhubaneswar, Sep 8 (NationPress) The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Charan Das expressed his discontent on Monday regarding the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)'s choice to abstain from participating in the upcoming Vice-President election set for Tuesday.
Das labelled the decision as "expected" but profoundly disheartening, indicating that the BJD has yet again failed to establish a definitive and significant position in national politics.
He noted, "While the BJD presents itself as a secular party, historical evidence suggests it has frequently allied with the BJP under the guise of maintaining 'equity and distance'. This abstention is merely a repetition of that pattern," he commented.
The Congress leader accused the BJD of not only weakening its role as an opposition party but also neglecting the broader needs of Odisha's populace.
He questioned, "They claim to make decisions that favor Odisha, but what tangible benefits have we seen from such political compromises? Has there been any enhancement in education, worker wages, or benefits for farmers? What are the structural or institutional advancements?"
Das further emphasized that the BJD's abstention signifies a lack of political bravery.
He stated, "The party lacks the fortitude to separate itself from the ruling powers at both the national and state levels. By choosing to abstain, they reveal their frailty and their failure to act as a genuine opposition voice," he added.
Earlier on Monday, the BJD announced its decision to abstain from voting for the Vice-President's position.
In a statement to the media, senior BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra said, "Following discussions led by our party President Naveen Patnaikji with senior party leaders and the Political Affairs Committee, the Biju Janata Dal has decided to abstain from tomorrow's Vice-Presidential elections. We choose to remain equidistant from both the NDA and INDIA bloc alliances, focusing instead on the development and welfare of Odisha and its 4.5 crore residents."
Meanwhile, Union Minister and senior BJP leader Jual Oram remarked that by opting to abstain, the BJD and its party leader Naveen Patnaik are indirectly endorsing the NDA candidate.
The voting for the vacant Vice-President's role is set for September 9.
The BJP-led NDA has nominated seasoned BJP leader and Maharashtra Governor, C.P. Radhakrishnan, as its candidate, while former Supreme Court judge Justice (Retired) B. Sudershan Reddy is representing the INDIA Bloc for the post.
