Giridih (Jharkhand), Sep 9 (NationPress) The remains of two women, who had been unaccounted for since Thursday within the jurisdiction of the Gawan police station in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, were discovered in the Golgo Pahari forest late on Monday evening, according to officials on Tuesday.
The police have taken Shrikant Chaudhary, a local from Kharsan village, into custody under suspicion of having committed murder against the two women -- Soni Devi (23) and Rinku Devi (31), residents of Neemadhi village.
An initial police investigation indicates that the women were strangled to death. Their remains are currently undergoing a post-mortem examination.
Reports from the police suggest that while Soni Devi was married, she had been involved in a relationship with Shrikant Chaudhary, which had previously caused a dispute in the village two years ago. A local council had deemed the affair “illegal” and imposed a fine of Rs 1.7 lakh on Chaudhary. Nevertheless, their relationship persisted.
Members of Soni’s family claim that Chaudhary had recently issued threats, stating he would kill her if she ceased communication with him.
On the last Thursday, Soni and her neighbor Rinku went to gather leaves in the forest, after which both women disappeared.
Two days later, Soni’s mother filed a missing persons report at the Gawan police station, suspecting Chaudhary's involvement in their disappearance. She provided the police with her daughter’s mobile phone.
Analyzing call detail records led detectives to Shrikant Chaudhary, who confessed to the crime during questioning. Based on his statement, the authorities located the bodies in the Golgo hill forest, approximately four kilometers from Neemadhi village.
This tragic event has sparked significant outrage within the community. On Tuesday, hundreds of villagers, alongside the victims’ families, protested outside the Gawan police station, accusing law enforcement of negligence. They alleged that police officers had demanded bribes to initiate the search for the bodies. The crowd also insisted that the accused be handed over to them.
The police station in-charge, Abhishek Singh, stated that further interrogation of Shrikant Chaudhary is ongoing. Additional law enforcement personnel have been dispatched to the station to avert any potential unrest.
