Will Odisha Congress Take Action After Bypoll Defeat?

Synopsis

In the wake of a recent bypoll defeat, Odisha Congress is set to reflect on its strategies and take necessary actions against members engaged in anti-party activities. As the party grapples with its losses, the impact of the ruling BJP's election tactics comes under scrutiny. Will Congress emerge stronger from this setback?

Key Takeaways

  • Introspection is key for Congress following the defeat.
  • Action will be taken against those involved in anti-party activities.
  • The BJP's extensive campaign efforts included significant financial resources.
  • Despite the loss, Congress garnered over 40,000 votes.
  • The political landscape in Odisha is shifting with BJP's growing influence.

Bhubaneswar, Nov 16 (NationPress) The President of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), Bhakta Charan Das, announced on Sunday that the Congress party will engage in a thorough evaluation to uncover the reasons behind their recent loss in the Nuapada bypolls. The party is committed to taking decisive action against individuals who participated in anti-party activities during the election.

Addressing the media, Das emphasized the need for a deep reflection within the party to assess the shortcomings observed during the by-election and to identify members who acted against party interests. He reassured that all individuals involved in such activities would face strict repercussions.

He further alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had heavily invested in the election, enlisting various ministers and leaders from both Odisha and the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh, including the Chief Ministers of both states, to secure victory in the Nuapada bypolls.

“Despite facing significant exploitation of power and extensive monetary distribution, the people of Nuapada entrusted us with over 40,000 votes, for which we express our heartfelt gratitude. We are proud to have achieved something unprecedented in our history,” asserted the OPCC president.

In response, Senior BJP leader and Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan criticized Das, stating, “Defeated parties often create numerous excuses to conceal their failures. Instead of engaging in grandiose claims, it would be more prudent for both BJD and Congress to acknowledge their rejection by the electorate.”

It is noteworthy that BJP candidate Jay Dholakia won with a total of 123,869 votes, defeating Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi by a margin of 83,748 votes. The BJD candidate, Snehangini Chhuria, finished third with 38,408 votes.

The BJP has now claimed the Nuapada seat from BJD, raising its overall tally to 79 in the state Assembly, which comprises a total of 147 seats.

Importantly, the Nuapada Assembly seat became vacant following the passing of four-time MLA Rajendra Dholakia, who was the father of the newly elected BJP MLA, Jay Dholakia, in September this year.
