Bhubaneswar, May 13 (NationPress) The Odisha Vigilance has apprehended five officials from the Forest Department for the alleged embezzlement of approximately Rs 80 lakhs under the 'Compensatory Afforestation Scheme' in the Kalahandi South Forest Division during the financial year 2023-2024, an official reported on Tuesday.
The individuals detained include Sairendri Bag, Deputy Ranger and In-charge of Jaypatana Range, along with Umesh Rout (Forester), Debraj Sunani (Forester), Ashok Kumar Sahu (Forest Guard), and Lalit Naik (Forest Guard) from the Jaypatana Range of Kalahandi South Forest Division.
“Following credible reports about significant misappropriation of government funds under the 'Compensatory Afforestation Scheme' in the Jaypatana Range of Kalahandi, a Vigilance investigation was initiated to verify the plantation efforts under this scheme, conducted by four teams comprised of 25 officers from Odisha Vigilance,” the official added.
According to Vigilance sources, during an in-depth assessment of various plantation sites at Champachuan and Khamarpadar within the Jaypatana Range, a significant shortfall in plantation efforts was discovered along with evidence of embezzlement of government funds amounting to several lakhs under the scheme.
“The inquiry also indicated that plantation funds were illegally redirected to numerous fictitious labor accounts, which were subsequently withdrawn and misappropriated,” stated the vigilance.
The anti-corruption unit of the Odisha government further noted that the preliminary evidence against the five Forest Department officials was convincingly substantiated by the findings from the inquiry.
On Monday, a case was filed against the implicated officials under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act for misappropriating vast amounts of public money totaling Rs 79,54,635 by failing to execute plantation work and falsifying official records related to the said plantation activities during the financial year 2023-24.
Subsequently, the accused were apprehended on Tuesday and presented before the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, in Bhawanipatna.
