Synopsis

On June 23, Deputy CM Pravati Parida reassured tourists that no special permissions are needed for visiting Odisha. Addressing concerns from a recent US travel advisory, she emphasized safety measures in place for visitors, especially for women. This article explores the implications of the advisory and the state's response to rising security concerns.

Key Takeaways

  • Tourists do not need special permissions to visit Odisha.
  • Odisha is considered safe under PM Modi's governance.
  • The state has swiftly addressed recent safety incidents.
  • Meetings are underway to enhance security at tourist sites.
  • The US travel advisory reflects broader diplomatic concerns.

Bhubaneswar, June 23 (NationPress) Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida announced on Monday that tourists visiting Odisha do not need special clearance from their home countries.

Responding to media inquiries regarding the Level-2 travel advisory issued by the US State Department, Parida remarked, "Based on my research, it appears that the influx of American travelers to Odisha is quite minimal. The US government might perceive India's rapid progress as a potential threat, which could be the reason behind such statements. However, I believe that neither Odisha nor any other Indian state is in a situation that necessitates tourists obtaining permission from their nations. Each country has the right to establish laws for its citizens, but I assure you that India is safe under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

During her address, the Tourism Minister emphasized the swift actions taken by the police after the distressing incident of a college student being gang-raped at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district on June 15, which drew national outrage.

Highlighting the state government's commitment to women's safety, she noted that the police apprehended all suspects involved in this heinous act within hours of the incident.

Parida also informed journalists that the state government has convened two meetings to discuss measures for enhancing security at various tourist destinations and popular spots, with a decision expected soon.

On this matter, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that the US travel advisory is a diplomatic concern and will be handled accordingly by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Previously, the opposition parties, including Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD), criticized the state government regarding the US travel advisory, alleging a decline in law and order under the BJP administration.

Senior BJD leader Arun Sahoo claimed that the advisory reinforces their assertion that the state’s law and order has deteriorated, with increasing incidents of sexual crimes and other atrocities over the past year under the BJP-led government.

He also alleged that Maoist activities, which were previously suppressed during the BJD-led administration, are resurfacing in the state.

Notably, the US has recently issued a Level-2 travel advisory for several states in India, including Odisha, advising its citizens traveling to these states to "exercise increased caution" due to crime, particularly against women, and threats of terrorism.

Point of View

Odisha's commitment to tourism safety amid rising concerns is crucial. The government's response to the recent US travel advisory showcases their dedication to both protecting visitors and ensuring a favorable international perception. It is vital for the state to maintain its appeal as a safe travel destination.
