Chennai, June 23 (NationPress) While the BJP and its allies celebrate the "successful" execution of the Muruga Bhaktargal (Lord Murugan Devotees) conference in Madurai, controversy has erupted over an audio-visual presentation that was shown during the event.
The video, which depicted Dravidian leaders E.V. Ramasamy Periyar, C.N. Annadurai, and M. Karunanidhi in a disparaging light, has faced severe backlash, even from within the AIADMK.
Former Minister and senior AIADMK official K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji, who attended the event with fellow party members, openly regretted the video's presentation. “It should have been avoided,” he stated on Monday, distancing himself from the controversial representation of these iconic Dravidian figures.
In a statement to reporters in Sivakasi, Bhalaji ardently defended the legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK founder C.N. Annadurai, asserting that his image and ideological influence are integral to the AIADMK’s identity. “Anna was pivotal in elevating the marginalized in politics. Because of his efforts, rickshaw pullers and daily wage laborers could become MLAs and Ministers,” Bhalaji noted.
He acknowledged that while some may not align with the ideologies of leaders like Periyar, many continue to respect and admire them. “Rather than criticizing past leaders—especially those who championed the upliftment of the oppressed—we should highlight their accomplishments. Discussing their ideologies negatively only stirs unnecessary debates,” he cautioned.
Bhalaji further recalled that AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had embraced Anna’s ideals. “Jayalalithaa appointed someone from the Backward Classes like me as a minister in her Cabinet. That’s the legacy we uphold. Our general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami continues to maintain these values,” he said.
The contentious video at the conference praised Hindu Munnani as the defender of dharma while labeling Dravidian leaders, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, DMK MP A. Raja, and Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani, as symbols of adharma and “atheist foxes.”
Despite court orders to keep the event non-political, the conference included several veiled criticisms of Dravidian ideologies, with speeches from figures like Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan adding to the political undertone.
The Madras High Court had previously cautioned organizers against blending politics with religious activities. Nonetheless, the content and rhetoric of the Murugan conference have sparked backlash, even among attendees, overshadowing what was intended to be a spiritual event.
