Bhubaneswar, July 16 (NationPress) On Wednesday, members and leaders of the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) clashed with the Commissionerate Police at Lower PMG Square in Odisha's capital, Bhubaneswar, while attempting to gherao the Lok Seva Bhavan (State Secretariat). Their protest was aimed at seeking justice for Soumyashree Bisi, a student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, who tragically passed away on Monday after a self-immolation attempt over alleged sexual harassment by a faculty member.
The police responded by deploying water cannons and firing tear gas to control the crowd as protestors attempted to breach police barricades.
Numerous BJD members and leaders were detained by the Commissionerate Police to restore order.
The protest commenced at Master Canteen Square and progressed to PMG Square, witnessing substantial participation from party leaders, female members, and supporters.
Emotional speeches, slogans, and placards were prevalent, all calling for justice for the deceased student and demanding stringent action against the accused.
During the protest, several BJD members, including Pranab Prakash Das and Priti Ranjan Gharei, sustained injuries.
BJD leaders condemned the BJP-led state government for its failure to provide justice for Soumyashree.
Opposition leaders criticized the inaction of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, and local authorities, which they claim contributed to Soumyashree's unfortunate death.
The party expressed deep concern regarding the rising incidents of crimes against women in the state and called for urgent policy reforms and accountability.
The demonstration, they emphasized, represents not just the plight of one girl, but the safety and dignity of all women in Odisha.
The silence from those in power is deemed unacceptable.
The BJD has been advocating for a judicial inquiry led by a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court into Soumyashree’s self-immolation, as well as the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister.
In response to the protest, BJD Vice-President Debi Prasad Mishra stated, "This reflects the outrage of the people of Odisha. As the responsible opposition party and the largest political entity in the state, we strongly oppose the appalling circumstances leading to the death of this college student, who felt compelled to resort to self-immolation."
He revealed that six months prior, Soumyashree had presented her case to the college's internal committee.
Mishra further disclosed that she had lodged a complaint with Shadevkhunta Police on June 13 regarding harassment by the Head of the Department, Samir Kumar Sahu.
"The Balasore Superintendent of Police and Collector were informed, yet no action was taken. On July 1, Soumyashree also reached out to the Chief Minister, the Union Education Minister, the State Higher Education Minister, and the local MLA, but received no response. Even the local MP admitted to neglecting her concerns. This is utterly unacceptable and should be condemned," he asserted.
Mishra highlighted alarming statistics, noting that 15 women are raped daily in Odisha, with over 3,044 reported cases according to data shared by the women's wing to President Droupadi Murmu.
In addition, the opposition BJD has declared an eight-hour bandh across Balasore district on Wednesday, demanding a judicial investigation into this tragic incident.
