Agartala, July 16 (NationPress) In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles in collaboration with Tripura Police have successfully intercepted narcotics valued at Rs 30 crore on Wednesday, as confirmed by officials.
A defense spokesperson reported that during a routine inspection, the Assam Rifles and Tripura Police personnel halted a truck in Khayerpur, west Tripura. Following a thorough search, they discovered three lakh highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, within the vehicle.
The estimated worth of these methamphetamine tablets is Rs 30 crore. Unfortunately, the driver of the truck managed to flee during the operation. The seized narcotics have been forwarded to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for in-depth investigation and appropriate legal measures.
This significant seizure underscores the unwavering dedication of the Assam Rifles towards achieving a drug-free Tripura and a drug-free Northeast, as stated by an official.
Authorities suspect that these methamphetamine tablets, which enable users to remain awake and engage in continuous activity with minimal need for sleep, were smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram and southern Assam, eventually reaching Tripura for trafficking into Bangladesh. These drugs can manifest in various forms, including pills, powders, or large crystal chunks known as ice.
Ice, or crystal meth, remains a favored substance, especially among young adults frequenting dance clubs and parties. Myanmar’s Chin state serves as a central hub for smuggling various drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband items through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
Mizoram is bordered by Myanmar for 510 km and Bangladesh for 318 km, with significant stretches of unfenced territory.
In response to the ongoing drug crisis, the Chief Minister of Tripura recently announced that, following the counsel of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses and their illicit trade.
Holding the Home portfolio, the Chief Minister further noted that Tripura is being exploited as a corridor for illegal drug trade, prompting law enforcement agencies to maintain heightened vigilance to combat these illicit activities.
