Bhubaneswar, June 11 (NationPress) The Odisha government has officially suspended Dhiman Chakma, a 2021 batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, after his apprehension by the state's Vigilance Department for alleged corruption, as stated in a directive from the General Administration and Public Grievance Department.

"WHEREAS, a case numbered 6 of 2025 at the Vigilance Police Station concerning Dhiman Chakma, IAS officer and currently serving as Dharmagarh Sub-Collector in Kalahandi district, is under investigation; NOW, THEREFORE, the Governor of Odisha, exercising powers under Sub-rule 3 of Rule 3 of the All India Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969, hereby places the aforementioned Dhiman Chakma, IAS (RR-2021), under suspension effective immediately," the order stated on Tuesday.

During the suspension period, Chakma's headquarters is designated at the Odisha General Administration and Public Grievance Department in Bhubaneswar.

Chakma has been instructed not to leave this headquarters without prior consent from the relevant authority.

At 35 years old, Chakma, who is the Sub-Collector of Dharmagarh in Kalahandi district, was detained by the Odisha Vigilance after being caught in the act of accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a local entrepreneur on Sunday night. This bribe was reportedly the first part of a total demand of Rs 20 lakh.

Vigilance officials reported that he allegedly solicited Rs 20 lakh from a businessman who operates a stone crusher unit, threatening to take action against the unit if his demand was not fulfilled.

Faced with no alternatives, the businessman informed the Vigilance authorities, who subsequently set up a trap.

"In response to the complaint, a trap was established on Sunday night. Dhiman Chakma was caught red-handed in his official residence while accepting Rs 10 lakh as a bribe."

Following his arrest, simultaneous searches were conducted at Chakma's government residence and office chamber, uncovering an additional Rs 47 lakh in cash from his home.

A native of Tripura, Chakma had previously joined the Odisha cadre as an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer in 2019 and briefly served as an Assistant Conservator of Forests in Baripada, Mayurbhanj.

Subsequently, he passed the civil services examination again, achieving a higher rank, and was inducted into the IAS in 2021.

He was assigned as the Sub-Collector of Dharmagarh in January 2024.
