Srinagar, May 15 (NationPress) J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah proposed a detailed and strategic plan aimed at revitalizing tourism in Kashmir following the tragic incident where 26 civilians were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam.
During a meeting with significant tourism stakeholders, he listened to their concerns and deliberated on future steps for the tourism industry in Kashmir in light of the recent disturbances impacting the sector.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive and well-thought-out tourism revival strategy. “I propose that we meticulously develop this plan without rushing,” he stated.
He suggested collaborating with the Tourism Department to create a robust tourism revival strategy after this year’s Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra concludes.
This strategy should provide support to various sectors including hotels, houseboats, shikaras, taxis, and handicrafts, while also exploring innovative ideas like unique shopping festivals modeled after those in Dubai.
“Engaging artists for cultural performances, resuming laser fountain shows, and introducing new attractions to enrich the tourist experience should also be considered,” the Chief Minister added.
Acknowledging the hurdles faced by the tourism sector, Omar Abdullah remarked, “I recognize the challenges many of you face, whether it’s managing businesses, retaining staff, or dealing with fixed costs. Many are under financial strain due to bank loans.”
He expressed particular concern for small-scale entrepreneurs who recently acquired loans to purchase tourist taxis, deluxe minibuses, or build guest accommodations in their homes.
“I aim to collaborate with the Tourism Department and relevant authorities to advocate for a specific relief package from the Government of India. This package should support those affected in border regions where homes and shops have suffered damage. For the tourism sector, we will investigate the feasibility of deferring loans for at least two quarters to alleviate financial pressures on stakeholders,” he remarked.
Highlighting the persistent interest in J&K as a tourism destination, Omar Abdullah noted that there is significant enthusiasm for promotional activities and FAM (Familiarization) tours.
“I have received inquiries from individuals and organizations eager to promote Jammu and Kashmir and attract tourists back in large numbers,” he added, promising to participate in joint promotional efforts as conditions improve.
The Chief Minister assured attendees that he would raise the issue of financial support and interest relief directly with the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, and other senior officials from the central government.
“We will approach this systematically and with a focus on results,” he confirmed.
Earlier in the meeting, tourism stakeholders presented various suggestions, such as organizing FAM tours, inviting the corporate sector to utilize LTCs and host meetings in the region, conducting government conferences in J&K, and advocating for lower airfares to make travel more accessible.
They underscored that with the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, now is the perfect opportunity to send a strong message to the nation that Kashmir is peaceful and ready to warmly welcome tourists.
