Guwahati, Oct 9 (NationPress) A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday as one individual lost their life and another was injured in a violent confrontation between two factions over paddy harvesting in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district, which borders Meghalaya, according to police reports.
Tensions have been escalating along the interstate boundary for over a week, with both parties asserting claims over the agricultural land where the clash occurred.
Police indicated that the altercation ignited when a group from Meghalaya allegedly commenced harvesting paddy on the contested land, provoking a response from residents of Tapat village, situated under Hamren police jurisdiction in Assam.
The conflict quickly intensified, resulting in a fierce confrontation between villagers from Lapangap in Meghalaya and Tapat in Assam.
“During the chaos, a person from the Karbi community was killed,” a senior police official from Meghalaya informed IANS.
The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Oriwell Timung. Another individual sustained injuries and has been transported to a medical facility for care, officials confirmed.
To quell the unrest, Assam Police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the assembly and restore order. The deceased's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
On October 6, officials convened a meeting of the Inter-State Border Peace Committee, where it was resolved that agricultural and developmental activities in the sensitive region would be paused until peace was entirely reinstated.
Nonetheless, Thursday’s violence erupted despite this agreement. In response to the clash, the Meghalaya government enforced a night curfew in Lapangap village within the West Jaintia Hills district to avert further conflict.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced that additional police forces have been dispatched, and both district administrations are in ongoing communication to uphold peace and order.
The border between Assam and Meghalaya stretches 884.9 kilometers, with disputes lingering in 12 sectors. Lapangap is among the six areas awaiting resolution. Earlier, both state governments settled six other disputed sectors through a memorandum of understanding signed in New Delhi in March 2022.
Efforts continue to achieve a lasting resolution in the remaining sectors to avert similar violent occurrences in the future.
