Srinagar, Oct 9 (NationPress) The lifeless body of one of the two missing soldiers has been found in the Kokernag region of Anantnag district in J&K on Thursday, with ongoing efforts to find the other soldier, officials reported.
The deceased was a paratrooper who had vanished during an anti-terror operation in the elevated areas of Kokernag in southern Kashmir on Tuesday. His body was retrieved along with his rucksack and service weapon remaining intact.
According to officials, the soldier, engaged in a continuous search and cordon operation (CASO) initiated earlier this week in the rugged terrain, is thought to have succumbed to an avalanche or snowstorm that hit the high-altitude region three days ago.
The identity of the fallen soldier has yet to be disclosed officially.
Army paratroopers, working under challenging weather conditions, encountered a sudden snowstorm. This resulted in the loss of contact with two personnel, which triggered immediate rescue operations despite the treacherous terrain and limited visibility.
The army has stated that extensive search operations are still underway to locate the second missing soldier. Despite adverse weather and tough topography, joint teams of the army and police are diligently working to find the missing personnel.
Joint forces, consisting of specially trained army commandos, other security units, and the J&K Police, are conducting vigorous anti-terror operations in J&K to dismantle the entire terror framework.
Following a high-level security review meeting on J&K in New Delhi on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reasserted the Central government’s commitment to achieving a terror-free J&K.
"We reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir along with the Lt. Governor and other senior officials," Amit Shah stated on X afterwards.
"We are dedicated to undermining the terror ecosystem in J&K. Our security forces will continue to be granted complete autonomy to thwart any attempts to disturb peace and security in the region. I instructed to further amplify alertness and cooperation to expedite progress towards Modi Ji's vision of a terror-free Jammu and Kashmir."
