Kolkata, Sep 25 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, accused opposition parties on Thursday of engaging in politics over tragedy amid a series of electrocution fatalities in and around Kolkata earlier this week.
A total of 10 fatalities due to electrocution, including eight in Kolkata, were documented from the state on Tuesday. This occurred after the victims came into contact with submerged electricity wires in waterlogged streets caused by heavy rainfall the previous night.
During the inauguration of several community Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata, the Chief Minister condemned the opposition for exploiting these tragedies politically.
“We do not engage in politics over tragedy. Every loss of life is lamentable. Those who are indulging in such politics should reflect on their actions,” stated Chief Minister Banerjee.
Though she did not mention him directly, she ridiculed Nawsad Siddique, the sole member of the India Secular Front (ISF) in the state Assembly, for filing a PIL at the Calcutta High Court concerning the electrocution deaths.
“Some individuals filed a case regarding this at the Calcutta High Court. There are people in the state whose only aim is to create unnecessary complications,” the Chief Minister remarked.
On this occasion, CM Banerjee also held the Damodar Valley Corporation accountable for the recurrent flood-like conditions in West Bengal, alleging they release floodwaters from their dams without notifying the state government.
“Inadequate dredging at the Farakka barrage and the Kolkata Port Trust's failure to conduct proper dredging exacerbates the situation. Additionally, there have been record rainfall levels in a short period. I have repeatedly brought these issues to light, but they continue to be ignored,” the Chief Minister concluded.
