Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's government faced a coordinated Opposition assault on Monday, 25 May, over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, with multiple party leaders demanding accountability for a surge in crimes against women, children, and public safety. The criticism, cutting across party lines, marks one of the sharpest attacks on the TVK government since it assumed office.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's Broadside

Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led the charge, posting a sharply worded message on social media demanding that the Chief Minister explain concrete steps taken to curb rising criminal incidents. Stalin questioned the effectiveness of the government's flagship Singapen Athiradi Padai (Women Task Force), a much-publicised initiative that critics now argue has failed to deliver on the ground.

'Is this Tamil Nadu or Uttar Pradesh? Where is your Singapen Athiradi Padai? Why is the Chief Minister, who spoke boldly before the elections, silent now?' Stalin wrote in his post.

He alleged that the state had recorded 25 murders, four double murders, and 19 sexual assault incidents in the past 15 days alone — figures the government has not publicly contested or confirmed. Stalin cited specific incidents, including the murder of a girl in Sulur, an alleged sexual assault case in Villupuram district, and reports that the Sulur victim's body had allegedly been cremated without informing her mother — an allegation that, if verified, would point to serious procedural failures by authorities.

Incidents Cited by the Opposition

Stalin further referred to the murder of a boy near Madurai's Meenakshi Amman Temple, a petrol bomb attack on a woman's residence in Coimbatore, and an incident in Perambur — the constituency represented by Chief Minister Vijay himself — where alleged drug peddlers reportedly vandalised vehicles. The geographic spread of the incidents cited underscores the Opposition's argument that the law and order breakdown is not localised but statewide.

AIADMK and AMMK Pile On

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami echoed the criticism, alleging that ruling TVK functionaries were intimidating both ordinary citizens and government officials. Palaniswami also questioned Chief Minister Vijay's decision to avoid holding a press conference, calling it a sign of the administration's unwillingness to face public scrutiny.

AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran joined the chorus, accusing the government of remaining passive despite repeated reports of sexual assaults involving minors across multiple districts. His remarks add further weight to the argument that the Opposition is unified in its assessment of governance failure, regardless of individual political rivalries.

Pressure on the Vijay Administration

The Vijay administration came to power on a platform of improved governance and public safety, making the current criticism particularly pointed. This comes amid growing public anxiety over crimes against vulnerable groups, a concern that resonates deeply in Tamil Nadu's urban and semi-urban constituencies. Notably, the Opposition's coordinated offensive — spanning the DMK, AIADMK, and AMMK — signals that law and order is fast becoming the defining political fault line in the state.
