Nagpur, Dec 9 (NationPress) On the second day of the Maharashtra Legislature's Winter Session on Tuesday, the opposition launched a spirited protest, accusing the state government of systematic neglect of farmers.
Leaders from the opposition criticized the MahaYuti government for its indifference, stating that despite multiple promises, the situation has deteriorated, with reports indicating an alarming average of eight farmer suicides daily.
Prominent figures such as Vijay Wadettiwar and Aaditya Thackeray condemned the government for having misled farmers regarding a comprehensive loan waiver that has yet to be realized.
They further lambasted the administration for its failure to guarantee a just Minimum Support Price (MSP) for essential crops.
Additionally, the opposition pointed out that the government's move to cut import duty on cotton to zero has led to a spike in foreign cotton imports, which has severely impacted local farmers.
They highlighted that soybean procurement centers have yet to commence operations this season, exacerbating farmers' distress, and criticized the government for the delay in issuing bonus payments for paddy.
Soybean farmers have reported being forced to sell their produce in the open market below the MSP, which barely covers their expenses, deepening the financial crisis in rural households.
Chanting slogans like “Deceitful Government!”, “Waive Farmers’ Loans!”, and “Ensure Fair Prices for Cotton and Soybean!”, opposition MLAs accused the government of making announcements without providing genuine relief.
The rising incidence of farmer suicides was cited as evidence of the administration's lackadaisical approach to agrarian distress.
The opposition noted that the government's lack of urgency was underscored by the recent statement from the Union Agriculture Minister, who indicated that the Centre had not yet received any proposal for assistance for rain- and flood-affected farmers from the state.
Later, the state government clarified that it had submitted the proposal on November 27.
