Over 1 Million Visitors Explore 75 Renowned Lighthouses in India by September

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) The 75 renowned lighthouses in the nation welcomed over 1 million visitors in FY25 (up to September), the government announced on Friday.
These 75 lighthouses have been developed with an investment of Rs 60 crore.
As reported by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, during the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, these dedicated lighthouses attracted an impressive 1.6 million visitors, reflecting a remarkable increase of over 400 percent in tourist footfall from 400,000 in 2014.
Between April and June this year, more than 500,000 tourists visited the lighthouses, affirming the vision to transform these iconic maritime structures into lively tourist hotspots as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
These enhancements have also led to job creation, providing 150 direct and 500 indirect employment opportunities in nearby hotels, restaurants, tour operators, transportation services, and local shops and artisans.
With a coastline stretching over 7,500 kilometers, India is home to 204 lighthouses that quietly protect its rich maritime heritage.
Historically serving as navigational aids for sailors, these iconic structures are being redefined as tourism destinations under the Indian government's developmental vision.
This initiative aims to preserve the historical and architectural significance of lighthouses while unlocking their potential for economic growth and community empowerment.
The central government is actively promoting lighthouse tourism as part of its broader Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 and Amrit Kaal vision 2047 to enhance India's cultural heritage and maritime legacy.
By developing these sites, the government seeks to enhance India’s tourism offerings while creating employment opportunities and fostering local economic growth.
Some lighthouses date back centuries and are located near Unesco World Heritage Sites like Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu or other significant cultural landmarks.
