Gujarat recruits 54,509 police personnel in 10 years, 13,591 more posts underway
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat has completed the recruitment of 54,509 police personnel across various ranks over the past 10 years, Director General of Police G.S. Malik announced on Wednesday, 8 July at an appointment ceremony in Gandhinagar. The disclosure came as 449 newly recruited unarmed Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) received their appointment letters from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Scale of Recruitment
The decade-long drive has filled posts ranging from Police Constable to Police Sub-Inspector, according to Malik, who described the exercise as transparent and systematic. He added that recruitment for another 13,591 posts under the 2026-27 cycle is already progressing rapidly, signalling the state government's continued push to expand and modernise its police force.
Massive Candidate Turnout
The scale of public interest in these positions was underlined by Gujarat Police Recruitment Board Chairperson Neerja Gotru, who revealed that more than 4.6 lakh candidates had registered for just 472 unarmed PSI posts announced under the 2024-25 recruitment cycle. The final selection involved physical tests, written examinations, document verification, and medical examinations — all conducted through what officials described as a controversy-free process.
What the DGP Said
Malik praised the new recruits as 'highly educated' and 'technologically proficient,' urging them to uphold dedication, discipline, and integrity throughout their careers. He also commended the Recruitment Board for completing the process 'without controversy,' calling it worthy of recognition. 'The force is increasingly benefiting from better-trained and well-qualified recruits capable of meeting the challenges of modern policing while maintaining public confidence,' he said.
New Training Resources Launched
The ceremony also saw the release of new training books prepared by the Gujarat Police Academy, covering India's new criminal laws, forensic science, criminology, community policing, police organisations, human behaviour, and human rights. An in-house e-module developed by the Police Department was simultaneously launched, reflecting the state's emphasis on technology-driven law enforcement training.
Senior Officials Present
The event was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, senior Home Department officials, and senior officers of the Gujarat Police. The broad representation of political and administrative leadership underscored the government's stated priority of strengthening public security infrastructure. With the next recruitment cycle already in motion, Gujarat's police expansion is set to continue into the coming financial year.
