Kolkata, Oct 16 (NationPress) On this World Food Day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted the initiatives implemented by her administration to promote food security for all citizens within the state, revealing that more than seven crore people are receiving free ration each month.
In a post on social media on Thursday, the Chief Minister asserted that through the state-run 'Khadyasathi' program, free rations are accessible to nearly 9 crore individuals across the state.
"Among these, 7,50,00,000 people enjoy free rations delivered to their doorsteps via the 'Duare Ration' initiative. The remaining recipients collect their food grains from ration shops of their choice," she stated.
Additionally, she mentioned that during major festivals such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Chhath Puja, and the month of Ramzan, along with Eid celebrations, impoverished families receive essential items like sugar, flour, and chickpeas (specifically during Ramzan) at subsidized rates.
She also pointed out that through another scheme named 'Maa', her government offers lunch to underprivileged individuals at a nominal price of just Rs 5. "Through 356 'Maa Canteens', 8,58,00,000 individuals have benefitted," the Chief Minister remarked.
Furthermore, she reported that this year, the state procured a record 56.33 lakh tonnes of paddy from 16.50 lakh farmers for the 'Khadyasathi' initiative, ensuring fair pricing.
Moreover, the state government has established 745 fair price outlets under the 'Sufal Bangla' brand, providing low-cost vegetables and fruits for the economically disadvantaged.
"Fish is now also available at reasonable prices through Sufal Bangla. We are significantly increasing the number of these outlets for public convenience. Our ongoing efforts to secure the right to food for all will persist in the future," the Chief Minister asserted.
