Chandigarh, July 29 (NationPress) The Counter Intelligence (CI) team of Amritsar has successfully dismantled a cross-border arms smuggling operation with the apprehension of an operative linked to a smuggler based in Pakistan, as reported by Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday.
The individual arrested has been named Bharatpreet Singh, hailing from Marhi Megha village in the Tarn Taran district.
Law enforcement officials have seized five advanced pistols from him, including two 9 MM, two .30 bore, and one .32 bore, along with his motorcycle that was utilized for transporting these illegal consignments.
DGP Yadav revealed that initial inquiries indicate that the detained suspect, accompanied by two associates, was operating under the instructions of a smuggler in Pakistan who has been deploying drones to drop weapon shipments across the border.
This arrested individual was allegedly supplying firearms to criminals and gangsters in Punjab to escalate unlawful activities within the state, according to Yadav.
Detailing the operation, the DGP noted that the Counter Intelligence team received credible intelligence regarding the recovery of weapon shipments from the India-Pakistan border near Daliri village in Tarn Taran.
In a prompt response, police teams intercepted Bharatpreet Singh in Ibban village in Amritsar while he was en route to deliver the consignment, recovering the illegal arms from his possession.
Investigations are ongoing to identify the broader network's connections.
A case has been filed under the Arms Act along with various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Police Station State Special Operation Cell in Amritsar.
Just last week, the Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence team in Amritsar dismantled another cross-border illegal arms smuggling ring connected to Pakistan, arresting an operative and seizing ten .30 bore sophisticated pistols along with magazines.
