Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 29 (NationPress) Senior leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Rajya Sabha MP, Sasmit Patra, has officially resigned from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT, which is chaired by BJP's Nishikant Dubey. This decision follows what Patra describes as a disrespectful remark made by Dubey regarding the esteemed leader, Biju Patnaik.
In a letter directed to the Chairman of Rajya Sabha on Saturday, Patra stated, “I am resigning from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT under the Chairmanship of Nishikant Dubey as a matter of principle and in protest. I cannot ethically continue to serve under a person who disrespects the memory of Late Shri. Biju Patnaik, as he did in a public statement today.”
Patra requested the Rajya Sabha Chairman to accept his resignation and pass it to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, since the Committee falls under Lok Sabha jurisdiction.
Expressing his dismay on social media, Patra characterized Dubey's remarks as outrageous, false, and irresponsible, aimed at maligning Biju Patnaik, a revered freedom fighter, visionary leader, and a true son of the soil whose contributions to India are indisputable.
“Attempts to misrepresent history and defame a respected leader for political gain are intolerable and reprehensible,” he added.
Referring to the legendary former Chief Minister of Odisha as a national icon, Patra emphasized that the legacy of Biju Patnaik will always overshadow trivial political skirmishes.
Simultaneously, several other BJD officials also voiced their strong objections to Dubey's comments regarding the former Chief Minister of Odisha.
“I categorically condemn the irresponsible statements made by @nishikant_dubey against the iconic #BijuPatnaik. Such baseless and historically inaccurate claims are a serious affront to an illustrious freedom fighter and a lasting symbol of Odisha’s pride and valor,” remarked BJD MP Subhasish Khuntia.
It is worth noting that on March 27, during a press conference, Dubey alleged that Jawaharlal Nehru was supported by the CIA during the 1962 war with China, claiming that Biju Patnaik, then Chief Minister of Odisha, acted as a liaison between the US government, the CIA, and Nehru.
