Morena, Oct 18 (NationPress) A peon at a private clinic was apprehended during a covert operation for performing an unlawful fetal sex determination test while masquerading as a doctor in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, according to police reports on Saturday.

The individual in question has been identified as Sanju Sharma (30), who worked as a peon with the District Education Department.

Authorities stated that Sharma was taken into custody during a coordinated raid involving Health Department officials from Gwalior and Morena, alongside social activist Meena Sharma, near Gadora Pura on Joura Road in Morena city late Friday.

Padmesh Upadhyay, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Morena, informed the media that the raid was executed under the supervision of Morena District Collector Lokesh Jangid following a tip-off.

"An undercover woman accompanied by a policewoman in civilian attire was sent to ensnare the accused," he stated. The team discovered Sharma equipped with a portable ultrasound machine and apprehended him as soon as he commenced the procedure.

Upadhyay also disclosed that a case has been lodged at the Civil Lines police station, and the ultrasound machine was confiscated.

The accused has been handed over to local law enforcement.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Sharma was employed as a peon at Bilgaon Middle School. However, he faced suspension in November 2024 due to involvement in illicit activities.

A senior Health Department official informed IANS that Sharma had been under observation for the past six months after an individual was apprehended in Jaipur for selling a portable ultrasound machine. This person had informed the police that Sharma was involved in conducting illegal fetal sex determination tests. "Since then, he has been under surveillance and was caught in the act. The police are conducting further investigations," the official added.

It is important to note that identifying the sex of a fetus for non-medical purposes is illegal.
