New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) In a pivotal move aimed at enhancing rural transformation, Nagaland Central University has introduced a new postgraduate (MA) programme in Rural Development and Management.
This initiative is timely, given that more than 70 percent of Nagaland's populace lives in rural areas, highlighting the necessity for targeted development strategies.
The university states that this programme, offered by the Department of Rural Development and Planning, is designed to cultivate a skilled workforce adept at navigating the various challenges and opportunities present in rural settings, especially in Nagaland and the wider North Eastern region.
Approved in the 40th Academic Council meeting led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Jagadish K. Patnaik, the programme will start with an initial cohort of 20 students.
Application submissions are open until July 20, and for candidates not taking the CUET, an entrance test is set for July 28.
This new course features an extensive curriculum that combines theoretical classroom instruction with practical, field-based experiences. It encompasses vital topics like the rural economy, governance, social dynamics, natural resource management, and the formulation and execution of development programmes.
Prof Jagadish K. Patnaik emphasized the programme’s significance: “This initiative underscores our dedication to academic excellence and the pressing developmental needs of rural and tribal populations. By merging theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, we aspire to cultivate professionals who will effectuate substantial change at the grassroots level.”
He further expressed his best wishes for the programme, anticipating it to become a foundation for nurturing leaders grounded in community realities.
Prof Jayanta Choudhury, the Head of the Department, remarked, “Establishing this programme is a strategic decision to foster local leadership and professional skills in rural development. It will not only empower students academically but also allow them to significantly impact their communities.”
He also recognized the contributions of Dr Deepa Thangjam, Dr Merensangla Longkumer, and Dr Guneshori Maisnam, Assistant Professors in the department.
In support of the initiative, Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro-Vice Chancellor at the Medziphema Campus, assured thorough support for the programme’s successful implementation.
