Chandigarh, June 16 (NationPress) As the countdown begins for the 11th International Day of Yoga, PGI Hospital has announced its ambitious goal to surpass its own record of the largest number of participants engaging in the common yoga protocol on June 21. Last year, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) achieved a remarkable milestone with 1,924 healthcare professionals participating in a yoga event, officially recognized by the Asia Book of Records.
The PGIMER Yoga Centre has been facilitating daily 45-minute yoga sessions for caregivers since June 1 as part of the lead-up celebrations. Regular yoga sessions for caregivers are conducted twice a week at PGIMER, and a special yoga summer camp for children is also ongoing. Director of PGIMER, Prof. Vivek Lal, expressed, “I encourage healthcare workers from the tricity to participate in PGI’s Yoga Day celebration on June 21, which fosters essential team spirit for delivering quality clinical services.”
Medical Superintendent Prof. Vipin Kaushal assured that, “All necessary arrangements are in place. In the event of rain, the celebration will be relocated to Zakir Hall.”
Dr. Akshay Anand, the Professor overseeing the yoga centre, emphasized, “Yoga serves as an evidence-based approach to holistic healthcare and is vital for achieving work-life balance, which is why the Y-break initiative has been adopted in over 19 departments.”
With over 3,000 participants already registered for the 11th International Day of Yoga, the event underscores yoga's vast benefits for mental and physical health, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, aiding in hypertension and diabetes management, alleviating chronic back pain, and enhancing posture.
PGIMER is committed to integrating yoga into holistic healthcare and research, acknowledging its significant role in promoting overall wellness. Several ongoing studies aim to explore the advantages of yoga and its incorporation into patient care, ultimately enhancing treatment outcomes and supporting comprehensive rehabilitation.
Through its yoga centre, PGIMER aspires to provide a fully equipped facility for practicing yoga under the supervision of experienced instructors, catering to healthcare workers, staff, faculty, and patients alike.
